Chapter Six

“EXCUSE ME, one moment,” Ian said as he went to unlock the front door.

A man slightly older than Ian stepped into the gallery. He was very fashionably dressed in expensive leather shoes, dark crisp jeans, a stylishly cut blazer, and a very trendy little scarf that seemed to hang just so around his neck. Ian closed the door behind his visitor and spoke quietly with the man. Anna couldn't make out the words, but the tone was friendly and it seemed to her that Ian was quite happy to see him.

The two men clasped hands and talked rapidly in low voices. She couldn't quite make it out from where she was sitting, but she got the strong impression that they were speaking another language. After a few moments of conversation, the man removed a small jewelry box from his jacket pocket and gave it to Ian. The glint of something expensive flashed when Ian opened the box and Anna was able to hear him say, "Thank you, Jacques. It's beautiful."

His voice dropped low again, and the man named Jacques leaned in and kissed Ian on each cheek before embracing him tightly. There was no denying the light in his eyes and the joy he felt at this man's visit.

Could it be that Ian was gay? It made sense, didn't it? The handkerchief, the little red scarf, and what was probably the biggest sign of all, he was dangerously handsome. Anna was never big on silly stereotypes, but the unattainable mega-gorgeous gay man was just too appropriate in this situation.

She reached for another pastry and sighed inwardly.

At least she'd found some good company. Wasn't it better to be hanging out with a sweet and caring man than sitting alone binge eating on fatty baked treats? So what if he wasn't going to turn into a sexy distraction? At least she still had her pain au chocolate.

Ian released his grip on the man and they said their quiet farewells. When Jacques was gone, and the door was locked again, he turned his attention back to Anna.

"Who was that?" She tried her best to make the question sound completely innocent.

"Just an old friend," he replied. The look on his face made it seem like there was more to the story, but that they weren't quite close enough to get into that yet.

"You wanted to see my studio?" he continued.

Anna nodded and followed him across the gallery.
